Day 6: Surajgarh – rural India

Jaipur – Surajgarh/ Shekhawati region. Today, we drive to the semi-desert Shekhawati region.

Day 7: Bikaner

Surajgarh – Bikaner. Travelling west, our next stop is the 14th century desert town of Bikaner.

Once an important staging post on the great caravan routes, much of the atmospheric old town which we will explore is still encircled by massive fortified walls. Within these walls are havelis, artisan shops and people going about their daily lives.

Day 8: Jaisalmer

Bikaner – Jaisalmer. Driving through the Rajasthani Thar desert we arrive at the medieval caravan outpost of Jaisalmer, one of the jewels in India’s crown. Exquisite wood and yellow sandstone buildings dot the town and within Jaisalmer Fort are homes, hotels and shops hidden in ancient lane ways.

Day 9: Jaisalmer Desert Festival

Bright and early this morning we take a guided tour of the Jaisalmer Fort. Today we have a wonderful opportunity to experience the exciting spectacle of the golden city’s grand parade. Afterward we’ll wait in readiness at the First Gate of mammoth stone fort. Here, with the honey colored fortress as a backdrop there will be plenty of photo opportunities as the procession marches by. Then, together we can walk alongside the festival and street parade as it weaves its way through the city streets of the Rajputs to gates of the town stadium.

We too will enter the stadium (scheduled to arrive at 12 noon) and watch the festival events for an hour or so before continue with our city sightseeing tour (time permitting).

Later in the afternoon after time to freshen up and have some lunch we enjoy a camel ride across the vast, rolling sand dunes of the desert. Overnight – Jaisalmer

Day 10: Jodhpur & the Mighty Thar Desert

Jaisalmer – Jodhpur. An interesting drive through increasingly varied scenery takes us to Jodhpur, a town at the edge of the mighty Thar Desert.

Day 11: Ranakpur

Jodhpur – Ranakpur. Leaving Jodhpur, we drive to Ranakpur, a small town tucked away in a remote valley and famed for its beautiful 14th century Jain temples.

Days 12 – 13: Ranakpur – Udaipur – picturesque Lake Pichola

Continuing south, we arrive at Udaipur. An oasis of cool, with its massive lake and Venetian-like appearance, Udaipur is one of the most romantic towns in Rajasthan.

A favorite amongst travelers, Udaipur is crammed full of palaces and temples. During our stay we’ll enjoy a cruise on Lake Pichola, plus touring of the imposing City Palace, not to mention free time to explore and perhaps shop for colorful Rajasthani souvenirs and Indian spices.

Day 2: Delhi – Ajmer – Pushkar Camel Fair

This morning is an early start as we board the Ajmer Shatabadi express bound for Ajmer. Seated in the air conditioned chair class carriage and leaving the city behind we look out upon a landscape of golden desert studded with green fields of agriculture and peaceful villages. Upon arrival to Ajmer a short drive leads us to our accommodation, a kilometer from the uproarious gathering of the Pushkar Camel Fair.

For the next few nights we bed down in our comfortable Swiss style permanent tented camp. Each high roofed tent with solid flooring, proper beds and linen offers the facilities of air conditioning, en suite with a bath and hot and cold running water.

After lunch and time to freshen up we head over to the frenzy of activity and riot of colour that is associated Pushkar – possibly the world’s largest camel fair. Attracting some 300 000 visitors, 40 000 camel, cattle and horses the fair draws sightseers, pilgrims, nomads, breeders, herdsmen, farmers and traders with their accompanying family, livestock and wares from all over the state of Rajasthan. Pushkar is an authentic cultural spectacle that’s totally unique and promises to be good fun. Overnight – Pushkar

Day 3: Camel judging, cricket, music & magicians

pushkar fairToday offers a glimpse at the serious business of livestock trading and the judging of the best bovine and came lids in each category. There are also more light hearted activities on offer such as the camel running races, tug of war, awards for the best dressed camel and a beauty pageant. Take a look in at the longest moustache competition or keep score at the cricket match between the local Pushkar club and a random assortment of tourists.

There are also vibrant folk music and dances, magic shows and various other traditional entertainment and competitions as well as hundreds of authentic stalls to explore, packed with jewelry and textiles from the surrounding areas.

Day 4: Pushkar – bathing at the ghats

Pushkar LakeToday marks the start of the Kartik Poornima, a Hindu holy day celebrated on the full moon or the fifteenth lunar day in the month of Kartik. According to the Hindu scriptures the lake relates to Brahma, the god of all creation and is one of the five most holy Hindu pilgrimage sites in India.

The Brahma temple here is the most important temple in Pushkar, and is in fact the only Brahma temple in the whole of the country.

On this day of celebration countless pilgrims swathed in colourful fabric converge for a holy dip in the sacred lake before the morning sun has cast its first rays on the earth. Surrounded by 52 bathing ghats (a series of steps leading to the lake), throngs of devotees line the water’s edge praying to the deities before washing away the sins of a lifetime.

After all sin has been absolved, the atmosphere is electric and the carnival, music, dancers, magicians, acrobats, snake charming, horse and camel racing continues. If all the excitement becomes to much and you’re in need a breath of fresh air remember you can always take stroll and explore any one of the 500 Hindu temples surrounding the lake and the local area.

Day 5: Ajmer Sherif and onward to Delhi

Pushkar – Delhi. This morning offers free time before visiting the town of Ajmer Sherif. The most notable site is the resting place of the Sufi seer, Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chisti who died here in 1236 after six days of fasting and praying. Possibly the most important Muslim shrine in India fervent pilgrims patronize the shrine as did many of the Mughal rulers including that of Emperor Akbar.

Leading off the Dargah Bazaar we enter the shrine via a gateway of immensely beautifully intricately carved silver doors. In the courtyard stands two huge cauldrons with capacity of 2240 kg and 4480 litres! That’s a lot of chicken soup!

Onward to the station we board our train to Delhi arriving at 22:45 in the evening and transfer to the airport for your onward international flight.

Day 3: Pushkar

After breakfast, go for a full day sightseeing and visit the Brahma temple (said to be one of the few temples in the world dedicated to this deity) Pushkar Lake, Man Mahal and Savitri temple in Pushkar.

Also visit the famous Dargah Sharif at Ajmer. Relax at the resort after a full day of sightseeing and shopping. Overnight at the resort in Pushkar.

Day 4: Pushkar – Jojawar (160 km from Pushkar, 3½ hrs drive)

After a leisurely breakfast, check out of the hotel and enjoy a beautiful drive to Jojawar. Check in to the hotel and lunch at the hotel. After lunch we proceed for an amazing insight into the village life and its surroundings on the back of the famous Marwari Horses.

Day 5: Jojawar

A very exciting day awaits you; after breakfast we start the day with train Safari which is one of the major attractions at Jojawar.

jojawar train safariThe train safari takes you through the beautiful & scenic Aravallis passing through tunnels and bridges overlooking the dazzling lake and the forest around it. This gives a good insight into the local tribal life.

The train journey will be followed by the Jeep safari organized to the neighboring tribal and Rebari settlements where one could interact and peep into the rich rural culture of Rajasthan and later visit a famous tribal horse lord temple where high tea is served just around sunset.

Day 6: Jojawar – Udaipur (150 km from Jojawar, 3hrs drive)

After breakfast we drive to Udaipur, the city of lakes. The city was built in 1559 A.D. by Maharaja Udai Singh and has been described as the most romantic spot in the continent of India.

Visit the City Palace museum, the Jagdish temple, Sahelion Ki Bari (Queen’s resort for their friends) Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandir (Folk art museum) and the Pratap Memorial. We will also visit the Shilpgram, a tribute to the Rajasthani rural life and the craftsmen.

Day 7: Udaipur – Jodhpur (185 kms from Udaipur, 4-5 hrs drive)

After breakfast proceed by road to Jodhpur. Enroute visit the Ranakpur Jain Temples.

Ranakpur is widely known for its marble Jain temple, and for a much older Sun Temple which lies opposite the former. In general, the Jain temples of Ranakpur present a distinct style of their own. The ceilings of the temples are adorned with foliage scroll work and geometric patterns. The top and bottom part of the domes are joined by Brackets with figures of deities on them.

Arrival in Jodhpur and visit the Umaid Bhavan Palace Museum.

Day 8: Jodhpur – Dabdi (70 kms from Jodhpur, 1½ hrs drive)

Check out of the hotel after an early morning breakfast and start the day with the morning sight seeing of Jodhpur which includes the massive Mehrangarh fort.

This massive Mehrangarh fort came first and around it grew the city of Jodhpur protected by a high stone wall with seven gates and countless bastions) en route Osian.

osianOn arrival at the resort we begin our adventure of the camel safari. Packed lunch will be served in the afternoon arrival at village Bikamkor with a packed lunch. On arrival you will be met by our Safari staff and Camel riders. Then start your Camel Safari for village Dabdi, a two hour ride. Just before sunset, arrive at your exclusive mobile safari camp. Enjoy an evening under the stars followed by a candlelit dinner. Over night at the Dabdi dunes. Distance covered-9 kms.

Day 9: Dabdi – Osian

After breakfast we will start our safari through the Thar Desert. After a four hour ride we approach the oasis village ‘Khetasar’ where we visit the local weavers and the potters. Here lunch will be served by the oasis or at a village hut. After lunch resume the safari for the resort covering a total distance of 25 Km.

Alternatively for those not wanting to proceed to the resort by camel, Jeeps will be waiting to take you to the resort and there the afternoon can be spent enjoying the swimming pool located on the highest sand-dune.

Day 10 : Osian – Sodakore (200 kms from Osian, 5 hrs drive)

After breakfast take a short tour of the famous Osian Temples and then proceed to Sodakore.

The city was a major religious centre of the kingdom of Marwar during the Pratihara dynasty. Of the 18 shrines in the group, the Surya or Sun Temple and the later Kali temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and the main Jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira stands out in their grace and architecture.

Arrival at the nature resort in Sodakore which offers Organic food, farm fresh dairy and poultry products. In the evening enjoy the village safaris interacting with the vibrant village community and a walk around the Amla Orchard.

Day 11 : Sodakore – Jaisalmer – Sam (110 kms from Sodakore, 3 hrs drive)

Check out of the resort after breakfast and proceed for sightseeing of Jaisalmer which includes the golden-hued Jaisalmer fort, Nathmalji ki Haveli, Patwon ki Haveli, Salim singh ki Haveli.

Also visit the prestigious camel breeding farm in the evening around 1530hrs and proceed to Mandawa, a small and bustling town in the Shekhawati region lying north of Jaipur.

DAY 01 : ARRIVE DELHI

On arrival in India you will be greeted and escorted by our Executive to your hotel. (Rooms will be available from 1200 hrs)

DAY 02 : DELHI

After breakfast, enjoy the sightseeing of Delhi.

Drive past Red Fort (Closed on Mondays) the 17th century imposing fortress built in red sandstone is surrounded by a huge 33m high boundary wall. Inside are exquisite palaces and beautiful gardens.

Opposite the Red Fort lies Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque) made of red sandstone and white marble, completed in 1656 at a cost of one million Rupees has perfect proportions. Jama Masjid is India’s largest mosque where more than 20.000 people can kneel in prayer. The interior of the prayer hall is divided into aisles by arches. The walls and floors are of marble inlay panels.

Also visit the Raj Ghat on the banks of the river Yamuna, Mahatma Gandhi’s Memorial, where he was cremated following his assassination in January 1948. The memorial lies in the midst of landscaped gardens and made of a simple square platform of black marble inscribed with his last words “Hey Ram”. An eternal flame burns 24 hours.

You will drive Past Rashtrapati Bhawan once the Viceroy’s residence is now the official residence of the President of India.

DAY 0 3: DELHI / AGRA (Approx. 206 Kms – 5 hrs drive)

After leisurely breakfast drive to Agra. On the way visit Sikandra.

Sikandra: The mausoleum of the great Mughal King Akbar (1556-1605). Akbar began building it during his lifetime and his son, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, completed it. It has a large arched entrance and green lawns, on which deer can be seen grazing, surround the tomb.

Visit Agra Fort, -Built by the great Emperor Akbar in 1565 AD, the fort is a masterpiece of design and construction. Within the fort are a number of exquisite buildings, including the Moti

Masjid, Diwane-I-Am, Diwane-I-Khas and Musamman Burj, where the Emperor Shah Jahan died in imprisonment, besides Jahangir’s Palace, Khaas Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal.

DAY 05 : AGRA / FATEHPUR SIKRI / JAIPUR (Approx. 232 Kms / 05 hrs)

After breakfast drive to Jaipur. On the way visit Fatehpur Sikri.

It is a beautiful and deserted medieval city built by Akbar the Great in the 16th century to serve as the capital of his vast empire. The Mughals later abandoned this city for lack of water.

After sightseeing drive to Jaipur. Maharaja Jai Singh II built Jaipur in the 18th century. It is a planned city built with ancient Hindu rules as the colonial capital of a richly colorful state. The whole city was painted pink to welcome the visit of Prince Albert in 1853.

DAY 06 : JAIPUR

After breakfast, half-day excursion trip takes you to Amber Fort with Elephant or Jeep ride. The Amber Fort was built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, is one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture. It gives extensive views over a deep narrow valley and the wider plains beyond.

En route, make a photo stop at the palace of winds the Hawa Mahal. A 5 storied building with 25cm thick facade from the 18 century having 953 windows and niches so that ladies of royal family could see the procession and events in the city without being visible to the people.

In the afternoon, visit City Palace. The beautiful palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh during his reign. Among the various forts and palaces of Jaipur, City Palace stands apart, with its outstanding art and architecture. City Palace complex covers a huge area, which is divided into a series of gardens, courtyards and buildings. The premises consists several buildings like Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Mukut Mahal, Maharani’s Palace, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum.

Also visit Jantar Mantar (1728-34) by king astrologer Jai Singh II. The instruments are built of stone with marble facing on the important plains for measuring the harmony of the heavens.

DAY 07 : JAIPUR / JODHPUR (Approx. 332 Kms – 07 hrs)

After breakfast drive to Jodhpur. Set on the edge of the Thar desert, the imperial city of Jodhpur echoes with tales of antiquity in the emptiness of the desert. Once the capital of the Marwar state, it was founded in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs who claimed to be descendants of Rama the epic hero of the Ramayana.

DAY 08 : JODHPUR

After breakfast enjoy the sightseeing of Jodhpur.

Visit Mehrangarh Fort, which was built by Rao Jodha in 1459. It has various pavillions beautifully decorated and at times filled like museums with the old royal artifacts. From the top of the fort one can get a bird’s eye view of the old city. You will notice the predominance of blue houses referred to as Brahmin houses – the colour being associated with the high caste.

Also visit Jaswant Thada. It is a white marble memorial built by Sardar Singh in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The monument, in its entirety, is built out of intricately

DAY 09 : JODHPUR / RANAKPUR ( Approx.169 Kms – 3 ½ hrs drive)

After breakfast, drive to Ranakpur. On arrival, visit the Ranakpur Jain Temples. Renowned for some marvelously carved Jain temples in amber stones, Ranakpur is one of the five holy places of the Jain community. These temples were created in the 15th century A.D. during the reign of Rana Kumbha and are enclosed within a wall. The central ‘Chaumukha’ or four-faced temple is dedicated to the venerated Tirthankara Rishabhji. Open on all four sides, it enshrines the four-faced image of Adinath. Sprawling over 48,000 sq.feet, the temple is an astounding creation with 29 halls and 1,444 pillars – all distinctly carved.

Images of 24 tirthankars are carved on the ‘Mandaps’ or porticoes in a corridor around the shrine with each mandap having a ‘Shikhar’ or spire adorned with little bells on the top. The gentle breeze wafting through the corridors move the bells creating celestial music all around the complex. Rising in three stories, the temple has four small shrines with 80 spires supported by 420 columns.

DAY 10 : RANAKPUR / UDAIPUR (Approx. 90 Kms – 02 hrs drive)

After breakfast, drive to Udaipur. Udaipur is known as the Venice of the East. It has to its credit some beautiful temples and gardens. It lies in the Girwa Valley amidst the Aravali hills of South Rajasthan. The City is considered a Romantic city with its lakes, gardens, temples and –an Oasis in the Thar Desert. Arrive Udaipur and transfer to the Hotel.

Later visit enjoy Boat ride on Lake Pichola. Lake Pichola derives its name from Pichola Village. Maharana Udai Singh enlarged the lake after he founded the city of Udaipur. This picturesque 4 km long and 3 km wide lake encloses the Jag Niwas Island and the Jag Mandir. The City Palace extends along its eastern banks.

DAY 11 : UDAIPUR

City Palace: One of the largest royal complexes in Rajasthan, the City Palace stands majestically on a promontory on the picturesque Lake Pichola. The complex boasts 11 constituent Mahals (palaces), with balconies, towers and cupolas, offering a breathtaking view of the lake and its surroundings. The Durbar Hall, which was used as a venue for formal occasions like state banquets and meetings, has most luxurious interiors highlighted by some of the largest chandeliers in the world. The Palace also houses a museum displaying a number of interesting artifacts.

Folklore Museum: Bhartiya lok Kala mandal was founded by Padma Shri Devi Lal Samar in 1952. The main objective of the Institute is to conduct studies on the folk art, songs and festivals of regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh etc and to revive a vanishing folk culture. The institute has a puppet unit that trains children, teachers and other artists in the art of puppetry, as this is a very powerful non-conventional educative medium.

Sahelion ki Bari:The Sahelion-ki-Bari Garden was built in early 18th century AD as a retreat for ladies of the royal household to spend their time in leisure. The enchantingly beautiful Garden is famous for its lotus pool, fountains (in the shape of birds), lush green lawns, flowerbeds, and marble pavilions, offering a breathtaking view to visitors.

Jagdish Temple:Built in 1651 AD by Maharana Jagat Singh, Jagdish Temple is the largest and the most beautiful temple in Udaipur. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is famous for its beautiful sculpted images and towering shikhara. The temple represents a fine example of Indo-Aryan architectural style.
